What it is like
A small tree. It grows 5-15 m high. The bark is grey. The small branches are round and have silky brown hairs. The leaves are oblong and like firm paper. The leaves are dark green and shiny above. They are pale green with short hairs underneath. Leaves are 15-25 cm long by 4.5-7.5 cm wide. The midrib and veins are prominent under the leaf. The flower cluster has flowers in equal length stalks along the stem. They are 5-30 cm long. The petals are greenish white. The male flowers and female flowers are separate on the same stalk. The fruit is a rusty colour and 2-3 cm across. It is on a very short fruit stalk. There are 1-3 seeds.
There are about 18 Ryparosa species. Also put in the Flacourtiaceae family.
Where it is found
A tropical plant. It occurs in Sarawak and Java. It grows between 400 and 1,600 m altitude. It can be up to 2,000 m altitude.
