What it is like
A shrub. It grows 1 m tall. The bark is thin and develops cracks along it. The leaves are narrowly oval and 4-5 cm long by 1-3 cm wide. The flowering shoots are in the axils of leaves and have 15-20 flowers. The fruit are 1 cm across and are blue-black.
There are about 170 Gaultheria species.
Where it is found
It is a temperate plant. It grows between 3,500-4,000 m above sea level.
