What it is like
A herb. It grows from seed each year but can grow for a few years. The stems are erect and have ribs along them. The leaves are oval and 3-12 cm long. The flowering head is at the top. The flowers are dark purple-red.

It is a tropical plant. It grows in waterlogged soil. In southern China it grows between 100-2,000 m above sea level. In Sichuan and Yunnan.
