What it is like
A herb that keeps growing from year to year. It grows 40 cm high and spreads 1 m wide. The stems are erect and branching. The leaves are narrow and sword shaped and taper towards the tip. The flowers are yellow but turn red. They have 4 petals.
There are about 125 Oenothera species.
Where it is found
It is a temperate plant. It will grow in most soils. It is best in an open sunny position. It is resistant to frost and drought. In Argentina it grows from sea level to 2,800 m above sea level.
