What it is like
A tree. It grows about 15 m high. The fruit have a woody covering with rigid spines. The fruit segments have red skin along the sides. The fruit can be 6-9 cm long by 4-7 cm wide. The pulp is sweet. Each segment has one black seed that is 2 cm long.
Where it is found
It is a tropical plant. It is an understorey tree. It grows in upland forests and floodplains. It grows up to 600 m above sea level. In Colombia it is mostly between 100-350 m above sea level.
