What it is like
A large tree. It grows 65 m tall. The trunk is 2 m across. The bark is scaly and has a peppery camphor smell. The leaves are simple and alternate. They are oval and rough. The flowers are 5 mm across and white. The fruit are 3.5 cm long and a yellow to red nut. The fruit has 5 wings.
Where it is found
It is a tropical plant. It grows in mixed dipterocarp forests on coastal hills up to 400 m above sea level.
