What it is like
A herb. It keeps growing from year to year. The rhizomes or underground stems are enlarged and succulent. The above ground stems are erect. They are 40-50 cm high. The leaf stalk of the stem leaves are 1-4.5 cm long. The leaf blade is oval and 4.5-8 cm long by 2.5-3 cm wide. There are teeth near the tip. The flower spikes are 5-18 cm long. There are 4-6 flowers in a ring. The flowers are red or purple. The teeth are D shaped on the flower.
There are about 300 Stachys species.
Where it is found
It is a subtropical plant. In China it grows in broad leafed forest and waste areas and wet grassland. It grows between 200-700 m altitude in southern regions.
