What it is like

A herb. It has many leaves in a ring and they are 1 m long. The sheaths are covered with scales. The blade is narrow and with a sharp tip. They are 3 cm wide and with loose sharp teeth. Leaves are more pale underneath. There are many flowers in a dense head. The flowers are 8 cm long. The fruit is narrowly oval and 5 cm long by 2 cm wide. They are edible.


Where it is found

It is a tropical plant. It grows on dry ground at 300 m above sea level in central Colombia.
