What it is like

A small herb. It keeps growing from year to year. It grows 10-15 cm tall. It has runners 15-20 cm long. These can form roots at the nodes. There are several leaves in a ring at the base. The leaves are spoon shaped and 3-7 cm long. There are coarse teeth along the edge. The leaves on the stem are alternate and 2-4 cm long. The flowers are purple or white with purple spots.

There are about 30 Mazus species. Also put in the family Scrophulariaceae.


Where it is found

A tropical plant. It grows in wet places and in open forests below 300 m above sea level.
