What it is like

A sweet pea plant. It is long and twining. The stems are smooth, slender and somewhat angled. The leaves are alternate and compound. There are broad stipules and a tendril at the end. The flowers are yellowish-white. They are about 15 mm long. Several flowers occur in clusters. They have 5 sepals and 5 petals. The fruit is a flattened pod. It is about 4 cm long.

There are about 150 Lathyrus species.
