What it is like

An evergreen tree. It grows 12-15 m high. The trunk is 35-50 cm across. The trunk is twisted. The leaves are 10-15 cm long by 4-6 cm wide. They are oval or oblong and narrowed at the base. There are teeth towards the end. The leaf stalk is 1-3 cm long. The flowering shoots are in the axils of leaves and are 4-7 cm long with only a few flowers. The flowers are white and 2 cm across. There are 20-25 stamen. The fruit is fleshy and 3-4 cm long. The stone inside is 2.5 cm long. It is pointed at both ends.

There are about 360 Elaeocarpus species mostly in the tropics.


Where it is found

A tropical plant. It grows at an altitude of about 300 m altitude. It usually grows along stream banks. In India it grows between 800-1,000 m above sea level in Arunchal Pradesh.
