What it is like
An upright shrub. It grows 1.5 m high and spreads 1.5 m wide. It loses its leaves during the year. The leaves are mid green and have sharp teeth. The flowers are white. They are in flat topped clusters. The fruit are red berries which become black as they ripen.
Where it is found
It is a temperate plant. It grows in shaded moist places on grassy slopes between 300-3,200 m above sea level in south China. It suits hardiness zones 5-9. In Sichuan and Yunnan.
