What it is like

A shrub. It loses its leaves during the year. It grows 1-1.5 m tall. The young branches are grey and hairy but do not have thorns. The leaves are oval or almost round and 4-11 cm long by 4-10 cm wide. They have 3 to 5 lobes. They have teeth. The flowers are greenish-yellow. They have a scent. Male and female flowers are on separate plants. The fruit are flattened berries. They are bright red and 6-9 mm across. They have persistent sepals on top.

It is a temperate plant. It is native to north and central China. It grows between 700-1,300 m above sea level.
