What it is like
A tree. It grows 25 m tall. It can be 44 m tall. The bark is fairly smooth but flakes off when old. It has a large crown and buttresses. The leaves are alternate and simple. The leaves are 4-11 cm long by 2-4 cm wide. They are oblong but wedge shaped at the base. The flowers are in groups in the axils of leaves and at the ends of branches. These are 2-14 cm long. The flowers are 2 mm long. The fruit are fleshy with a stone inside. The fruit are narrowly oval and 1-1.3 cm long. The outside is smooth and there is a thin fleshy layer.
There are 200 Licania species.
Where it is found
It is a tropical plant. It grows on sea shores and in rocky places up to 400 m altitude. It can grow in sandy and clay soils.
