What it is like
A palm. It has 1 stem. It grows 10 m tall. The trunk is 3-8 m across. It is green and smooth. The leaf sheaths are 30-90 cm long. The leaf blade is 1-2.5 m long and has 25-65 leaflets on each side. The flowering shoot is 15-100 cm long and it has 3-4 swollen bracts. Male flowers are in groups of 18 and female flowers occur singly. The fruit are orange to red and 1.5-2.5 cm across.

It is a tropical plant. It grows from the lowlands and up to 2,400 m above sea level.
