What it is like

A scrambling woody shrub. It grows 1 m tall. There are spines in the axils of leaves. The leaf blades are thick texture. They are 15-35 mm long by 7-15 mm wide. The edges fold back. The upper surface is dark green and underneath there is a coating. The flowers are 8-12 mm long and 5-6 mm across. The fruit is round or oval and 12-15 mm long. They are a shiny purple black when ripe.

There about 20-37 Carissa species. All Carissa species bear edible fruit. They grow in the tropics and subtropics.
