What it is like

They are 0.6-1 m long. There are spines along the edge. The flowering stalk sticks upwards. It has many flowers. There are also long bracts. The fruit is made up of several cells.

There are 172 Aechmea species and many cultivated varieties.

It grows in areas with 1,000 mm of rain per year. It grows between 200-450 m altitude.
