What it is like
A plant which grows attached to other plants. It can grown in soil. It has an underground stem or rhizome. The leaves are in a ring. They are rigid and point upwards with a canal in the top side. They are 0.6-1 m long. There are spines along the edge. The flowering stalk sticks upwards. It has many flowers. There are also long bracts. The fruit is made up of several cells.
There are 172 Aechmea species and many cultivated varieties.
Where it is found
It grows in areas with 1,000 mm of rain per year. It grows between 200-450 m altitude.
