What it is like
A cane or rattan. The stems are single. It is climbing and 30 m long. The stems are 3-5 cm wide. The leaf sheaths are yellowish brown and with needle-like spines 1 cm long. The leafy stalk is 2 m long with 25-50 narrow leaflets on each side. They are arranged regularly and closely spaced. The flowering shoot is 60 cm long. The fruit are yellowish brown/ They are 6 mm long by 4 mm wide.
There are 375-400 Calamus species. There are 175 species in tropical Asia.
Where it is found
It is a tropical plant. It grows in scrub forests at low elevations.
