What it is like
A shrub. It grows to about 1.5 m high. It spreads 1-2 m wide. It has a woody tuber under the ground. Young growth has grey hairs. The stems are usually branching from underground. The leaves are narrow and 8-17 cm long by 0.15 cm wide. They are crowded and deep green. The flowers are yellow and cylinder shaped. They can be 1.3 cm long by 0.8 cm across. They have a pouch on the lower side. Four lobes roll back as the flower opens. The fruit are pear shaped. They are succulent and greenish-yellow. They are edible. There is a hard stone with fleshy pulp around it. The fruit are 1.3 cm long by 0.9 cm wide.
Most Persoonias have edible fruit. There are about 75 species of Persoonia in Australia & New Zealand.
Where it is found
It grows in warm temperate locations. It grows in woodland on sandy and gravelly soils. It needs well drained acid soils. It can tolerate frost and dry periods.
