What it is like
A shrub or small tree. It grows 6-18 m tall. It can become a woody climber. The leaflets are 10-25 cm long by 8-20 cm wide. The flowers are in panicles 20 cm long. The flowers are cream and 8 mm across. The fruit is a pod 11 cm long by 3 cm wide. It is brown and velvety.
There are 2-4 Butea species.
Where it is found
A tropical plant. It grows in clear forests along rivers. It grows on granite soils below 800 m altitude.
