What it is like
A shrub. It grows 1-3 m tall. The stems are reddish. The leaves are sword shaped and 8-20 cm long. They have a peppery flavour when crushed. The flowers are small and white in groups in the axils of leaves. Both male and female flowers occur in the one plant. The fruit are oval red berries. They are about 1.5-2 cm long. They turn deep purple when ripe. The seeds are edible.

It is a subtropical plant. It grows in cool wet forests. It suits shady places.
