What it is like
A small tree. It grows 3-5 m tall. The stems have long sharp, straight spines at the base. It loses its leaves during the year. The leaves are alternate and 7-12 cm long. They are broadly oval and have teeth along the edge. The leaf stalks are red. The flowers are on old branches. They are in groups 5 cm long. The flowers have 4-5 round sepals. The fruit are green berries. They are 1 cm across.
There are about 17 Flacourtia species. Also put in the Flacourtiaceae family.
