What it is like
A small tree. It grows 5-8 m high. It has a rounded crown. The branches hang downwards. Many leaves fall off during the year. The leaves are smooth and oval. The leaf blade is 7-15.5 cm long by 3.5-9 cm wide. They are light green. The flowers are very small and cream. They are 0.2 cm long. They occur in clusters in the axils of leaves. The fruit are smooth and fleshy. They are round and 2-3 cm across. They are green when ripe. They have sticky flesh around several hard shiny seeds.
There are about 100 Planchonella species. They are mostly in Asia and the Pacific.
Where it is found
A tropical plant. It grows naturally as an understorey tree in open forest. In tropical Queensland it grows from sea level to 740 m altitude. It grows on well-drained soils.
