What it is like
A shrub. It loses its leaves during the year. It grows 1 m tall. The branches are purplish red. It has spines. The leaves are almost without a leaf stalk. The leaves are 1-3 cm long by 2-5 mm wide. They are pale green underneath. The flowers are in groups of 5-9. The fruit are black berries. They are oval and 8 mm long by 6 mm wide.
Where it is found
It is a temperate plant. In western China it grows in valleys and on the edges of forests between 1,900-2,800 m above sea level.
