What it is like

An evergreen shrub. It grows 3 m high and spreads 3 m wide. It has spines. The leaves are 2-8 cm long by 1-3 cm wide. They have a white powdery coating underneath. The flowers are in groups of 4-14. It has clusters of small, white berries.

There are about 450-500 Berberis species.


Where it is found

It is a warm temperate plant. In China it grows in mixed forests and on limestone slopes between 200-2,000 m above sea level. It suits hardiness zones 7-10.
