What it is like

A large herb. It is a root crop. The tuber is about 10 cm across. This produces one leaf on a stalk about 75 cm long. The leaf is about 100 cm across. It is pale green underneath. The leaflets are 2-25 cm long by 2-10 cm wide. The spathe is dark green outside and pink inside with dark green dots.

There are about 170-200 Amorphophallus species.


Where it is found

A tropical plant. In southern China it grows in limestone between 200-2,400 m above sea level. In Yunnan.

How it is used for food

The tubers are cooked and eaten. The young leaves are cooked and eaten. Caution: Most plants in this group contain oxalates.
