What it is like
A vine or woody climber. The leaves have 5 leaflets. The leaf stalk is long. The leaflets are broadly oval and have a sharp tip. The male and female flowers are separate. Male flowers are in large groups and female flowers are few. The fruit occur singly or in pairs. They are oblong and reddish-purple when mature. They are 6-7 cm long by 2 cm across.
Where it is found
It is a subtropical plant. In southern China it grows on mountain slopes between 300-1,600 m above sea level.
