What it is like
A ginger family herb. The rhizomes are 1 cm thick. The leafy shoots are 2.5 m tall. The leaves are narrowly oval and 24-40 cm long by 5-8 cm wide. The base is wedge shaped and slightly unequal. There are a few hairs on the midrib. The flower heads are made up of 3-5 flowers. These come from the base of the leafy shoots. The petals are white. The fruit taper towards the ends and are 7 cm long. They have a short beak. The seeds are narrowly oval and 4 mm long by 2 mm wide. They are dark brown and shiny.
Where it is found
It is a tropical plant. It grows in swamp and gallery forests. It grows between 1,100-1,500 m above sea level.
