What it is like
A tree that loses its leaves. It grows 35 m tall. The trunk is straight. The first branches are 20 m high. Branches are short and extend upwards. Older trees develop a flat top. The bark is grey and has rings. The leaves have leaflets along the stalk. The leaves are 15-45 cm long. Young leaves are bright red. There are 5-9 pairs of leaflets 8-12 cm long. The flowers are blue and in groups at the ends of branches. The fruit are flat leathery pods 5-9 cm long by 3-5 cm wide. They are pale brown and have a thickened upper edge. There is one flattened seed. It is 3 cm long by 18 mm wide. It is spread as the pod splits open.

Where it is found
It is a tropical plant. It grows in forests near rivers. It grows in evergreen and moist semi-deciduous forests. It does not grow in wet or swamp forest.
