All parts of the plant are astringent, the roots being more so than the leaves. The plant is also diuretic and vulnerary. It is used in the treatment of a variety of disorders including diabetes, urinary incontinence and, when combined with alum and honey, to rid the body of tape worms. The roots are used in the treatment of fevers.
