What it is like
Pedicularis longiflora tubiformis is a ANNUAL growing to 0.2 m (0ft 8in). It is in flower from May to October, and the seeds ripen from June to October. The species is hermaphrodite (has both male and female organs). Suitable for: light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils. Suitable pH: mildly acid, neutral and basic (mildly alkaline) soils. It can grow in semi-shade (light woodland) or no shade. It prefers moist soil.

The entire plant is used in Tibetan medicine, it is said to have a bitter and astringent taste with a cooling potency. Diuretic and febrifuge, it also removes any excess accumulation of body fluids. It is used in the treatment of inflammation of the liver or gall bladder, seminal/vaginal discharges, oedema and disorders associated with alcoholism. A decoction of the plant is used as a wash for diseased skin.
Astringent: Produces contraction in living tissue, reducing the flow of secretions and discharges of blood, mucus, diarrhoea etc.
Bitter: Increases the appetite and stimulates digestion by acting on the mucous membranes of the mouth. Also increases the flow of bile, stimulates repair of the gut wall lining and regulates the secretion of insulin and glucogen.
Diuretic: Acts on the kidneys, promoting the flow of urine.
Febrifuge: Reduces fevers.
Skin: Plants used in miscellaneous treatments for the skin.
