What it is like

Elatostema dissectum is a PERENNIAL growing to 0.7 m (2ft 4in). It is in flower from January to June. The species is monoecious (individual flowers are either male or female, but both sexes can be found on the same plant). Suitable for: light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils. Suitable pH: mildly acid, neutral and basic (mildly alkaline) soils. It can grow in semi-shade (light woodland) or no shade. It prefers moist soil.

Montane forests, evergreen riverine forests, or valley forests at elevations of 500 - 2100 metres in western China.

E. Asia - Himalayas from Sikkim to China.

How it is grown

We have very little information on this species and do not know if it will be hardy in Britain, though judging by its native range it could succeed outdoors in many parts of this country. Plants can be either dioecious or monoecious.
