How it is grown
Prefers a position in full sun in a well-drained, humus-rich fertile soil. Succeeds in dry soils. Retains its compact habit best when grown in an open position but with protection from cold drying winds. Dislikes cold exposed positions. Plants are quite hardy in Britain, tolerating temperatures down to about -15°c, though they seldom grow more than 1 metre tall in cultivation in Britain. The leaves have a honey-like scent.
Propagating it: Seed - sow spring in a greenhouse. Only just cover the seed and do not allow the compost to dry out. When they are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and grow them on in a greenhouse for at least their first winter. Plant them out into their permanent positions in late spring or early summer, after the last expected frosts. Cuttings of half-ripe wood, July/August in a frame.
