What it is like
Condalia hookeri is a SHRUB growing to 2 m (6ft 7in). The species is hermaphrodite (has both male and female organs). Suitable for: light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils. Suitable pH: mildly acid, neutral and basic (mildly alkaline) soils. It can grow in semi-shade (light woodland) or no shade. It prefers moist soil.

High sandy banks, often covering large areas with dense, impenetrable chaparral. Dry soils, especially on limestone.

Fruit - raw or cooked. Sweet and fleshy with a pleasant sweet flavour, it is mainly used for making jellies. The fruit has been boiled, then strained and the juice boiled again to make a syrup.

A blue dye is obtained from the wood. Wood - very heavy, hard, dense, close-grained. The dense heartwood is a brilliant red colour and has been used to make ornamental objects. It burns with an intense heat and is valued as a fuel.
How it is grown
We have very little information on this species and do not know if it will be hardy in Britain. However, judging by its native range, it could succeed outdoors at least in the milder areas of the country. The following notes are based on the general needs of the genus. A good bee plant. 149
